Since being crowned the first ever Magnum Queen of Dancehall in 2008, Tashon Williams, more popularly known as Baby Tash has been churning out hits such as “Mix Up” and “Facebook”. This highly educated former deputy head girl of Jonathan Grant High School comes prepared with sharp witty lyrics, the adoration of a legion of fans who voted for her as well as years of experience competing successfully in numerous talent shows.

Backed by a new management team, Free People Entertainment, Baby Tash is poised to become a main staple in the dancehall industry in 2011. Party Reportcard recently caught up with the dancehall goddess to talk about everything Baby Tash; past, present and future.

So, at what age did Tashon Williams realize she wanted to become Baby Tash the artiste?
Tashon actually wanted to become a media personality/journalist, and I loved acting, dancing and writing poems/songs. I never saw myself becoming an Artiste until I became the Magnum Dancehall Queen. It was almost as if I was searching for myself and music found me. Entertainment/Music is my passion, my love! Right now mi cyaa simi self a do anything else.

You have always mentioned education is very important to you; could you tell us about your educational background and even work experience outside of music?
I was successful in my CXCs and graduated from Jonathan Grant High. My single parent mom could not afford to fund my UTech nor Mico University degree, as I was accepted at both, hence, I could not attend. So I took it step by step. I got my first job at Sagicor (LOJ) Insurance, New Kingston. While, part-time, I persued both Business Administration Diploma at University College of the Caribbean and Information Technology atPortmore Community College, evenings and Saturdays, respectively. I completed a number of certificate coursesat various institutions, for my personal development. Courses include Entertainment & Micro-phone Techniques,Public Speaking Techniques, Data Operations and Customer Service Skills. My qualification got me a Human Resources Position at Dehring,Bunting & Golding (Scotia DBG). I began my Bachelors Degree at the University of Technology part-time, however, I had to take a hiatus due to certain issues. I got tired of sitting behind a desk after my co-workers reiterated that I was wasting my talent, when they saw me in action in a talent contest. I accepted a job in Entertainment at Sandals Montego Bay and the rest is history.

Tell us about some of the many competitions you have entered and how well you placed.
Everybody call mi di competition veteran! One thing people don’t know, however, is that I have not only entered performing arts competitions but also essay/written competitions, but always getting second place.
Ok, let me tell you some of them. I was crowned Miss Jonathan Grant High (Beauty & Brains Pageant) –Won Most Talented in Miss Sandals Mobay –Won DB&G Talent Annual Competition –Finalist in the Tastee Talent Contest (Drama) –Digicel Rising Stars (top 40 two consecutive years) –Dancing Dynamite –Received medals and merits in the JCDC Festivals of the Performing Arts (Speech & Drama) –High Schools Mock-Parliament Debating Competition –World Championships of the Performing Arts (Dance, received Certificate of Congratulations to perform in Hollywood with TeamJamaica.

How would you describe your style of music?
One can detect my wit, sex-appeal, creativity and intelligence in my lyrical content. My style is all about being real, fun, hardcore yet refreshing on the ear. I pull my topics from everyday life so people can relate. Mi talk updi tings dem fi di woman dem, an sawt out di man dem prapa!

Since winning the Magnum Queen of Dancehall title, what have been the main highlights of your career so far?
There is nothing like performing on stage and pleasing my fans. A big stage and bright lights give me an adrenaline rush. Mi love it! I am still the ‘new girl’ in the biz so everything so far is a highlight in itself. Working the stages, from Teensplash, Manchester Fiesta, RJR Cross Country Invasion to Fully Loaded. I can tell my fans, the best from Baby Tash is yet to come!

It’s often said that a female has to work twice as hard as a male to make it in the Dancehall industry; what has been the single most difficult obstacle or challenge you have faced in this regard?
I am blessed to have had the opportunity to be exposed through the Magnum Kings and Queens competition. Within months Baby Tash became a household name. I, however, still have to prove myself that I am not just “the winner of a contest” but I am fit and ready to play in the big league. Yuh know nuff producer just love voice man alone and mi know mi lyrically badda dan nuffa dem. Not to mention I can tear dung a stage show! But I can smell great things in the air and challenges are in all industries

We heard you are now with a new management team, tell us about that and how has that relationship been going?
Jah know mi cyaa complain. We just kick it off and their drive, professionalism, and belief in Baby Tash’s career, far surpass my expectations. The talent that Baby Tash possesses can never go to waste because people nuhblind. Baby Tash, Tameka Reynolds (Free People Ent), right now is di sickest team God could put together! It’s a Blessing! When yuh tink yuh plan nah work, don’t stress it, God has bigger plans for you.

What are you currently working on? Do you have any upcoming performances? What can the fans look out for from Baby Tash this year?
Wow! Since hooking up with Tameka Reynolds from Free People Entertainment, right now if yuh google “work”yuh might see “Baby Tash” to how hard mi a work. In the past month I have recorded almost ten songs. I am working with producers like Kirk Bennett, Bulby York, Skatta Burrell and Dre Day Productionz. My newly released singles “Bus Ride”, “Summer Body” and “Can You Keep Up” are going hard in the UK and North America. Mi a do dubs till mi weak! Crazy requests like OMG! My management and I decided to go really hard on production and promotion. So, fans can look out and listen out fi some mad tings.

If you could collaborate with any local or international act, who would it be? Describe adream collaboration for Baby Tash.
To do a collaboration with Beyonce would be like wow! Can you imagine! Sexiness on the double! She reminds me of me confident, talented, super sexy and she can shake what she got. People say I have a big booty but aneven bigger attitude. Lol. They always compare me with her.

Where do you see Baby Tash’s career in the next 5 year? Any plans of branching out beyond music?
I was destined to be a star and a star haffi shine! With the help of God In the next five years I expect Baby Tash to be the Brand for Dance Hall winning awards moving units and performing on major stages around the world. I will make my mark on this earth and it is going to be through music. I know my name will be in lights.

Do you have any advice for other aspiring entertainers and especially the ones participating in competitions?
Don’t go into a competition just thinking about winning. Think about personal development and having fun, while doing your very best. So, you will always know you are a winner regardless. Aspiring entertainers, make sure this is what you really want because anuh everyday ago be Christmas, some days ago be Japan tsunami and only the passion within you will keep you going. Self Respect all the way.

After taking on children’s music on 2009′s “Family Time,” Ziggy Marley returns to his regular musical path with “Wild and Free,” due out June 14 on his family’s Tuff Gong Worldwide label.

“I really enjoyed ‘Family Time’,” Marley tells Billboard.com. “But it was such a specific album for a specific reason, I just consider it in a different league than (2006′s Grammy Award-winning) ‘Love is My Religion.’ So it’s been awhile since I’ve done an album where I can go back to some issues and sing about some things I couldn’t address on ‘Family Time.’ But (‘Family Time’) was a really good project for me, and necessary at the time.”

Marley recorded “Wild and Free” in Los Angeles with producer Don Was and a group of musicians that includes Rolling Stones bassist Darryl Johnson; “He played with Miles Davis, and I wanted to hear Miles stories,” Marley says with a laugh. Guests on the album include actor Woody Harrelson on the title track, which was used for California’s Proposition 19 campaign to legalize recreational marijuana, Heavy D on “It” and Marley’s oldest son, Daniel, on “Changes.” Key to the album, however, were the extensive demos that Marley made in his home studio, which he says made it easier to achieve the sound he was looking for on “Wild and Free’s” 12 tracks.

“The problem with using live musicians before was it was hard for them to come in and capture what I needed,” he explains. “So the whole process of doing the pre-production on my own — putting on bass parts, putting on drum parts — was to avoid putting that amount of pressure on a musician coming into the studio to try to figure out what Ziggy wants, or what Ziggy’s sound is or what Ziggy likes. So I’d give them the sound. I’d give them a lot of the parts and they could interpret it or play it properly. I wanted it to be very organic and not over-thought or over-processed.”

A variety of themes run through the album, including “changes and revolution” both globally and personally. “Social revolutions and group revolutions are good and we need that,” Marley says, “but we also need personal revolution, revolution within ourselves that change who we are as people.” To that end is the album’s first single, “Forward to Love,” which was inspired by his wife, Orly. The use of cannabis and hemp are also promoted on the album, but not just for recreational purposes, Marley says.

“I wanted a movement attached to the record, and the movement is the whole idea of using the cannabis plant for more than what it’s used for now,” Marley explains. “It can be used for environmental reasons and industrial reasons and nutritional reasons, to benefit the planet, not just for getting high.” He’s also created a new super-hero, Marijuanaman, for his first graphic novel, which will be published on April 20.

“It’s entertainment,” Marley says, “but I don’t want this to be a novelty. This is a very deep character with issues to solve in this world. The story’s not about getting high and the munchies and all of that; the story’s about utilizing the plant in all its properties. I don’t think people understand how much good it can do.”

Marley has several concert dates booked already this year, but he says that the real push for “Wild and Free” will likely come later this year and in 2012. “I don’t think I’m going to get enough time this year to really explore this album live,” Marley notes, “so I’m looking for next year for it to be really about this album. I’ll probably play this album more extensively live next year than this year, so it’s looking like it’s gonna be a two-year plan of touring with this one.”

Here is the track list for Ziggy Marley’s “Wild and Free”:

“Wild and Free” (featuring Woody Harrelson)
“Forward to Love”
“It” (featuring Heavy D)
“Changes” (featuring Daniel Marley)
“Personal Revolution”
“Get out of Town”
“Roads Less Travelled”
“Mmmm Mmmm”
“Welcome to the World”

VP Records joins forces with Celebrity Apprentice to give back to charity as the company purchases $7000 worth of items at an art auction during the show’s The Art of the Deal episode, which aired on April 3, 2011 on NBC.
The label’s CEO Christopher Chin, president Randy Chin and vice-president Cristy Barber participated in the auction to help raise money for Celebrity Apprentice contestant John Rich (of acclaimed country music group Big & Rich), to benefit his charity, St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, based in Memphis, Tennessee.
The label bought Gary Busey’s painting for $5000 — a sale Busey personally brokered with the label’s heads, as seen in the episode. The painting now hangs in the VP Records boardroom in New York. Additionally, Barber purchased Richard Hatch’s final painting for $1000 to help the men’s team, Backbone, sell every single painting in their auction. She also nabbed a New Era baseball hat artistically decorated by John Rich. The hat was donated to Rich’s young son, Cash.
This Celebrity Apprentice involvement materialised because of the partnership between Cristy Barber and John Rich, who have teamed up for a trailblazing project where the name says it all — Reggae’s Gone Country. The compilation album features various artistes from both reggae and country music and is scheduled for release this summer as a joint venture between VP Records and Rich’s label, Warner Brothers Nashville.
With this unprecedented fusion of reggae and country music from some of its biggest producers and stars, Barber is again seeking to make in-roads and bring the reggae genre to a new fan base, and perhaps the largest musical audience whose ears give country music its powerful backbone.
“Classic country music is very big in Jamaica, which is what influenced me to do this project of having reggae artistes cover classic country songs,” reveals Barber. “It was natural to go to my friend John Rich, whom I have known for six years, to be my partner in this dream project.”

The Reggae category in the Grammy Awards may be at risk as the Grammy Academy recently decided to revise the number of awards given out. The overhaul has seen the number of categories reduces by 31, from 109 to 78 in an effort to “ensure that the Grammy remains a rare and distinct honour and continues to be music’s most prestigious and only peer-recognised award” according to the president of the National Academy of the Recording Arts, Neil Portnow. Some sub-genre categories have been merged while some international categories such as “Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album” and “Best Hawaiian Music Album” have been eliminated altogether. Also, there will no longer be separate awards given for male and female vocal performances in under genres such as Pop, Rock, R&B and Country. These changes will take effect at the next staging of the Grammy Awards Ceremony.

The restructuring of the Grammy Awards dictate that if for any year, fewer than 25 submissions are received for any category, the award for that category will be suspended for that year. After three (3) consecutive suspensions the category will be permanently terminated. Many industry professionals argue that this may prove detrimental to the Reggae category if the industry does not make an effort to vote and submit more entries each year.

The first ever Reggae Grammy was awarded to Black Uhuru in 1985 and the most recent to Buju Banton for his album “Before The Dawn” in 2011. Other winners include Shaggy, Beenie Man, Sean Paul, Shabba Ranks, Burning Spear, Bunny Wailer, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Sly & Robby, Ziggy Marley, Stephen Marley, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley and many others. The Grammy Award Ceremony is normally held in February of each year but no date has yet been set for the year 2012 which will mark the 54th annual staging of the prestigious event.

Veteran Reggae duo Chaka Demus and Pliers are gearing up to to release their much anticipated upcoming album. The album has yet to be named, but if the growing international popularity of their recent singles such as “I’ll Take You There” and “California One Night Stand” are anything to go by, then it should be a sweet treat for Reggae fans all over the world.
In the words of Pliers, “We are currently working on what might be one of the best reggae albums in Jamaica. The kids and the elders will love it. We haven’t named it as yet, though, because we have two or three songs to finish up. It’s gonna be full of variety and full of spice. Every different kind of flavour will be on it, many different types of music”.
Party Reportcard will be sure to keep you posted on when an official release date is set for the album. In the mean time European fans can catch the duo along their mini European tour this April.

According to reports, Reggae artiste Tanya Stephens, is to give a lecture at the University of the West Indies (U.W.I.) this upcoming Thursday (March 31, 2011). The event, hosted by the Department of Literatures in English, will be taking the format of a public lecture at the same Assembly Hall venue where controversial dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel gave his lecture a few weeks ago. Tanya will be speaking on the topic “Music: The Power to Shape Societies”.
The social-commentary-intensive lyrics of Tanya Stephens has long been used as case studies in the Department of Literatures’ “Reggae Poetry” course. According to UWI Lecturer Dr. Carolyn Cooper, the lecture “marks the revival of the brilliant public forums on ‘Women in Reggae’ that used to be hosted by the Reggae Studies Unit at UWI to mark International Women’s Month. The first forum, held almost a decade ago in March 2002, was organised by Ibo Cooper, who was then a research fellow in the unit. Judy Mowatt, Cherry Natural, Lady G, Lady Saw, Angie Angel, Queen Ifrica and attorney Sandra Alcott spoke with passion about their experiences in the reggae music industry”.

The old school yet tech-savvy Snoop Dogg is making news again after deciding to release his much anticipated Doggumentary album on MySpace two days prior to its official release date.

No word yet on why he chose MySpace over other social media platforms which seem more popular nowadays, but Snoop seems to be really making good use of the technology age and the online culture. He has been included in branded virtual goods, video games, social gaming tie-ins and the launching of his previous album, Malice N Wonderland, became a Ustream Reality TV show. He has also been releasing several tracks from the Doggumentary album via his Facebook page and his Twitter page in a series dubbed “Puff Puff Pass Tuesdays”, which seems to have been inspired by Kanye West’s “G.O.O.D. Fridays” series.

Doggumentary is being considered a conceptual follow-up to Snoop’s classic debut album, Doggystyle, released in 1993. It features other top artistes such as R. Kelly, Young Jeezy, The Gorillaz, John Legend, Kanye West, Wiz Khalifa and many others.

Click the album cover posted below to check out the album and purchase tracks from the Snoop’s MySpace page.
Versatile is best known for his breakthrough hit song “Bank In A Mi Pocket” on the Romeich Records produced Bank In A Mi Pocket riddim. His manager, Romeich Major, has since tweeted about the incident indicating that Versatile traveled alone and was at the party when he was set upon by men who were allegedly carrying a long-time grudge.
